De Turfvaert is a course we are particularly proud of for a number of reasons. First is the fact that it is a course that we had to build for a very limited budget (slightly more than 1 million euros), which made the amount of earth we could move limited. However we were very blessed with the fact that Turfvaert lies on pure sand and as such drains very well. Second is the fact that we made a number of important innovations in the way we built the course. For one it was the first new course in the Netherlands to have natural rough edge bunkers, which allows the maintenance to be less expensive. Furthermore we applied greenmix not only to the green, but also to large areas around the greens. This allows for a firm conditions and lower cutting heights before and around the greens, which stimulates traditional bump and run play.
Third a smart routing on a compact site with very short green to tee walks allows for quick rounds. In addition the fact that routing provides loops of 3,6 and 9 holes around the club house gives added flexibility to players and helps capacity utilisation. Finally the design of the firm greens, with many of them sloping away from the player, makes the course interesting for the better player whilst being sympathetic for the beginner and bogey players.
De Turfvaert has done very well since its opening, despite being in an area with a lot of other golf courses and difficult economic times. We are proud that we have been able to contribute to this success through a smart, differentiated, cost efficient and targetted design.
